MTD for Income Tax Compliance in Slough

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax replaces the single annual Self Assessment return with four quarterly updates and a Final Declaration. If your combined self-employment and property income is over £50,000, you must submit updates by 7 August, 7 November, 7 February, and 7 May, followed by a Final Declaration on 31 January. Missing all four quarterly updates blocks you from filing the Final Declaration at all.

We handle every quarterly submission and the Final Declaration for sole traders and landlords across Slough, connected directly to your Self Assessment position and, where relevant, your rental income reporting.

  • Quarterly update preparation and filing
  • Final Declaration submission by 31 January
  • MTD-compatible software setup
  • Threshold monitoring as your income changes

Why This Matters: Four Quarterly Deadlines Replace One Annual One

Under the old system, a single missed deadline meant one penalty. Under Making Tax Digital, four separate quarterly deadlines fall throughout the year, each needing its own submission through compatible software. While 2026-27 carries no penalty points for a late quarterly update, every one of the four must still be submitted before HMRC will accept your Final Declaration, effectively blocking your year end filing. This is exactly why quarterly submissions need treating with the same seriousness as the old annual deadline, not as an informal check-in. We calendar every quarter date the moment you come into scope.

Frequently Asked Questions

When did Making Tax Digital for Income Tax start?

From 6 April 2026 for anyone with qualifying income over £50,000, based on their 2024-25 tax return figures.

What happens if I miss a quarterly update?

In 2026-27, no penalty points apply, but you cannot submit your Final Declaration until all four updates are filed. From 2027-28, missed updates earn penalty points, with four points triggering a £200 fine.

What counts as qualifying income?

Your combined gross turnover from self-employment and UK property, before expenses. Profit is not what is measured.

Can I use a spreadsheet instead of software?

Only if it connects to HMRC-recognised bridging software. A plain spreadsheet with no digital link to HMRC does not meet the requirement.
